Pelosi Wannabe

This is only in humour because the wing-nuts are going to treat it differently to the Pelosi case. Or so I imagine. Hey, it’s my humour section. If you want gags and punchlines, go next door.

One of the criticisms of Pelosi when she visited Damascus was that she surrendered to Islamist radicalism by donning a head scarf. There were worse things said, but I don’t quote without linking and I don’t want to link to certain sites.

[Update, October 2007]

Laura Bush in Saudi Arabia
Mrs. Laura Bush talks with Dr. Samia Al-Amoudi, a breast cancer survivor, during a “Breaking the Silence” Coffee Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Mrs. Bush met with breast cancer survivors and members of their families to discuss awareness issues. Pictured at left is Dr. Samia’s daughter, Esraa Al-Harbi, 10-year-old author of a children’s book entitled, “My Mother and Breast Cancer.” The child at center is unidentified. Yglesias, commenting on the reactions to Mrs Bush wearing Islamic fashion in Saudi Arabia:

I’d kind of hoped that the mass smear campaign against Nancy Pelosi for doing the same was motivated by crass partisanship and not an actual principled belief in xenophobia over all else.

  1. The case of Lieutenant Colonel Martha McSally is interesting.

The Pentagon is dropping a policy that required American servicewomen in Saudi Arabia to wear the traditional Muslim veil. This, after the highest-ranking female fighter pilot in the U-S Air Force sued the Pentagon, claiming the policy discriminated against American women. Correspondent Nick Simeone has more.

It’s different to the above cases, mainly because the Pelosi and Bush chose to wear what they wore. McSally did not.
