Who does Daddy love more?

An interesting theory from Dr. Trita Parsi at Tony Karon’s blog. Netanyahu, as Prime Minister of Israel, tried to build ties with Iran. But…

None of his efforts bore any fruit, though. Iran’s dismissal of Israel’s conciliatory signals convinced the Netanyahu government that just like in the Iran Contra affair, Tehran only wanted to mend fences with the U.S. and had no real interest in rebuilding its ties with Israel.

Therein, of course, lay the real threat from Iran.

The Israelis saw danger in a rapprochement between Tehran and Washington, believing this would inevitably see the U.S. sacrifice some of its support for Israel in order to find a larger accommodation with Iran, in pursuit of U.S. strategic interests in the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea. Iran would become emboldened and the U.S. would no longer seek to contain its growth. The balance of power would shift from Israel towards Iran and the Jewish State would no longer be able rely on Washington to control Tehran. “The Great Satan will make up with Iran and forget about Israel,” Gerald Steinberg of Bar Ilan University in Israel noted. [16]

Israel’s relative regional importance to the U.S. would decline with a warming of ties between Washington and Tehran.

So, after nine months of courting Tehran, Netanyahu gave up and reverted back to the Peres-Rabin policy of vilifying Iran and seeking its international isolation.

  2. LOL! Normal Israeli behavior – they vilify the US (Great Satan) but want our money and our support against the UN.

  3. I’m not sure what to make of the comments so far.

This isn’t about dating, and the Israelis do not vilify the USA.

  4. Umm…

“The Great Satan will make up with Iran and forget about Israel”

That has to be a reference to the US and must be classed as vilification. Yes, a large segment of Israel hates the US even as they try to use us. It’s a standard case of wanting our support but not at the cost of accountability.

  5. It is Iran which refers to the USA as the Great Satan. I think the point of using the phrase: “The Great Satan will make up with Iran,” is to indicate the sea change of opinions required.

What are the clearest examples of an Israeli vilifying the USA that you can recall off the top of your head? After all, you do say it is “Normal Israeli behavior,” so I assume you can think of a few.

  6. i need more of the related snaps and the pics in your blog !

  7. misterlister,

If you want specifics please google about palestine; Israeli’s who blog have nothing good to say about the US every time we try to broker a peace that doesn’t include the removal of Palestine.

Other sources aren’t available since much of what I have was verbal “assaults” from Israelis the last time I was there. That being the case I understand if you take my comments with a large measure of salt.
