Jamal Zahalka

Jamal Zahalka is an Arab member of Israel’s Knesset. He plans to be aboard the next boat to Gaza, setting sail from Cyprus on Thursday. (The voyage has already been delayed a couple of times). Haaretz:

Speaking by telephone from Cyprus, from where the ship will depart Wednesday, Zahalka said he considers his plans to be permissible political activity covered by his parliamentary immunity, rather than a violation of the law.

“The siege of the Gaza Strip is a crime against hundreds of thousands of residents, and I’m here to fight this crime,” he said.

Greta Berlin, a spokeswoman for the U.S.-based Free Gaza, said 20 to 22 foreign activists planned to bring three or four doctors and medical supplies to Gaza. The activists will include Mairead Corrigan-Maguire, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976 for her efforts to bring peace to northern Ireland.
