Shaker Abssi arrested?

Abssi was the leader of Fatah al-Islam, which fought with the Lebanese Army in the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp. I blogged about it a few times, starting here.

Naharnet says that the Syrians told the French they have captured Abssi. But that was back in September, and I haven’t found any follow up.

The report came hours after the daily al-Bayan that publishes in the United Arab Emirates quoted a senior official of a pro-Syrian Palestinian faction as saying Abssi was arrested in Syria after infiltrating into its territory.

The DailyStar says the report has not been verified.

I heard about the arrest from an article saying that Syria had thwarted a suicide bomb attack against a football stadium. Naharnet, again:

Syrian security operatives have thwarted a suicide bombing at a soccer stadium in Damascus by aides to jailed Fatah al-Islam leader Shaker al-Abssi.

The daily newspaper al-Liwaa said the five-member terrorist cell had planned to bomb out al-Abbasiyeen soccer stadium during a major competition a month ago to avenge Abssi’s arrest.

In a previous post, I linked to a Washington Post story that is no longer available which states:

“Fateh al-Islam is an organization of al Qaeda that plans to conduct terrorism operation in Syria. It was discovered in August 2002,” Abdel Majeed said.

He said several members of the group were arrested over the last few years and an arrest warrant was issued in January for Shaker al-Absi, a Jordanian of Palestinian origin, who used to be in contact with the late al Qaeda leader in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Absi already served a three-year jail term in Syria for belonging to Fatah al-Islam, Abdel Majeed said.
