Bomb defused at Castlewell

The 300lb bomb was left outside a school, after those that set it gave up on attacking an army base. The Belfast Telegraph:

A huge dissident republican car bomb left near a primary school in Northern Ireland could have inflicted death and destruction on the same scale as the Omagh atrocity, the region’s chief constable has claimed.

[…] The bomb was defused by Army technical officers on Saturday after a five-day security operation prompted by a telephone bomb warning from a dissident faction.

[…] Sir Hugh said while the terrorists’ primary target remained the police, the incident in Castlewellan proved they didn’t mind who else they killed.

[…] It is understood that the caller who phoned in the threat claimed the bomb was destined for a nearby Army base at Ballykinler but that it had been abandoned en route.
